Shark Killed by Tourist Bite in Costa Rica Causes Activist Outrage

Sea Shepherd Paul Watson among those in uproar over attack

Shark3JACO BEACH – A dream surf vacation went tragically wrong for U.S. resident Andy Newberry last week when the Jersey Shore native mauled a bull shark in Costa Rican waters.

In his first trip to Costa Rica, Newberry, an avid traveler and surfer, hit the Jaco Beach waves early last Thursday to catch the morning break. After riding a few waves, Newberry said he spotted a silvery fin emerge from the water near the foot of his board.

“Everything was pretty Pura Vida up to that point, ya know,” Newberry said in a phone interview. “But then I saw that fin poking above the water and thought, ‘Oh shit!  We’re bait, dude!'”

According to Newberry, the suspected man-eater began circling a group of six or seven surfers about 30 meters from the shoreline. When the shark’s fin turned and appeared to be approaching Newberry directly, it was a kill or be killed moment, he said.

“I slid off my board, focused on that bad boy comin’ at me, and instincts took over, man,” he said. “I grabbed that sucker’s head and bit his fin like I was Mike Tyson.”

The ensuing struggle was witnessed from shore as dozens of tourists and locals gathered to watch the melee. Clouds of blood formed in the water though onlookers had a sense Newberry was holding his own as shouts of “take that flipper” and “you taste like chicken” could be heard during the throes of the battle.

“It was like watching a piranha and a chihuahua in a bathtub,” said witness Katarina Campos. “I didn’t know who was winning or losing, but it was far cooler than any UFC fight I’ve ever seen.”

After approximately 30 minutes, the splashing stopped and the struggle came to a close. Newberry was then filmed dragging the carcass of the 16-foot animal to shore and yelling “Gringo One, Jaws Zero!” and shot-gunning a beer.

The videos have since circulated online and caught the attention of several activist groups, including famed Captain Paul Watson, known as the Sea Sheppard, and the World Wildlife Fund.

“We are studying this attack very closely, and intend to pursue Mr. Newberry with due vigor,” Watson said in a phone interview. “Costa Rica has long been staining international waters with shark blood, and this appears to be an escalation we did not anticipate.”

Watson also said Newberry should “take on someone his own size” and issued an international bounty on the head of the “Jersey shark murderer.”

Newberry has since returned to New Jersey and refused further comment on advice of his attorney. The incident is the first recorded shark death via human bite in Costa Rican history.

  1. Well this fascinated history is very colorfull but false and full of bullshit , I am a local surfer from Jaco , teaching surfing every single day and in 32 years of surfing , never hear about shark attack in JACO BEACH , I also work in contact with the lifeguards in Jaco beach , so I can tell you that this history about a bull shark is complitly BULLSHIT.

  2. By the way if you look closer , we surf in warm waters ,we don’t used wetsuit the guy on this fake Jaco beach picture is using a wetsuit , fake reporting LOL..you guys need to find something better or real to write about it.

    • Erly ‘Sherlock’ Farrier, it is quite clearly a satirical article and meant to be taken as such. whats now funnier is that you felt the need to investigate.

      • I’m just imagining the phone call. “hey man its Erly, what’s all this about a man mauling a fully grown bullshark to death with his bare hands and teeth?……what do you mean that’s not true? But, but i saw it on the internet!”

  3. Are you kidding me? This is a success story where a man could have been killed. Are we so jaded that we think animals are greater than man? ridiculous….it is an animal and it cannot be compared to the beauty of a human life. That is embarrassing. I wonder how many of you would not kill the shark, but be all for abortion?

  4. Even the pic is a fake. That’s a dolphin not a shark. Horizontal tail=Dolphin, vertical tail=shark. Not to mention the story sounds like complete BS!

    • That there are ANY people in all the developed world who would have the initial reaction that this story was true, much less have them consist of half of the people who took the initiative to write a comment.. is actually really disturbing. But AT LEAST it’s not the majority.

  6. Okay this guy is incredible.. of course he is from New Jersey!! This guy is hilarious, obviously he is a pretty proud man and in a time of obvious panic, he kept it cool and killed the shark. Rolls reverse.. man vs wild.

  7. Please stop picking on my dear sweet son Jerry. He loves sharks and people too and even draws pictures of sharks and people playing together. So this story really got his emotions all twisted up. So please leave my son Jerry alone!

  8. Don’t listen to these people, Jerry. I was there and saw him tear that shark up! I thought Andy was gonna die, but he was lucky to have gotten the bull shark in his carotid artery. We’ll post some video of the damage he did to that beast in February. Stay tuned…

  9. A lot of people on here are saying this is a joke.. Please have some sympathy. I knew this shark and to hear some of the things you are saying about him is very disheartening. You should all be ashamed.
